Bintulu Port Officially Transitions to State Port Status

BINTULU, 22 June 2026 (The Capital Post) – Bintulu Port has officially transitioned from a federal port to a state port in a move aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Federal Government and the Sarawak Government while enhancing the port’s operational efficiency and economic contribution.

According to a post on the official Facebook page of Kementerian Pelancongan, Seni dan Budaya Malaysia, the cheque handover ceremony marking the status change was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Menara Kidurong, Bintulu.

The event was attended by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.

During the ceremony, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg handed over the cheque related to the port’s status transition to the Prime Minister following the signing of the agreement.

The ministry said the change in status represents a strategic step reflecting the commitment of both the Federal Government and the Sarawak Government to strengthen development cooperation, improve port management efficiency and accelerate economic growth at both the state and national levels.

The initiative is expected to further enhance Bintulu’s competitiveness as a regional trade and logistics hub while supporting inclusive, sustainable and high-impact development in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI.

Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) Datuk Ts. Mustafa Sakmud and Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook. – The Capital Post
