KUALA LUMPUR, 9 September 2026 (The Capital Post) – Malaysia is targeting its first-ever gold medal at the WorldSkills Competition Shanghai 2026, with 22 young competitors set to represent the country across 21 skills disciplines.
Deputy Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi expressed confidence in the Malaysian contingent’s ability to achieve the country’s “Road to Gold” ambition during a special meeting with the team at Menara Dato’ Onn on Tuesday (8 September).
He was joined by Deputy Works Minister YB Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Maslan and Ministry of Works Deputy Secretary-General (Policy & Development) YBhg. Datuk Dr. Khairus Masnan bin Abdul Khalid.
“TVET is no longer merely an alternative pathway or second choice. TVET is a pillar of modern economic progress, a key driver of future industries and a strategic platform for developing a highly skilled younger generation capable of competing globally,” Ahmad Zahid said.
He reminded the competitors that excellence depends not only on technical skills but also on mental strength, discipline, strong values and personal character when representing Malaysia on the world stage.
Malaysia’s participation adopts a “Whole of Nation” approach involving cooperation between the government, ministries, training institutions, experts, coaches and industry.

For the first time, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to be present in Shanghai to support the Malaysian contingent.
The competitors have undergone intensive preparations, including competition simulations, domestic and overseas training, as well as mental and psychological preparation.
Ahmad Maslan, who serves as Chef de Mission (CDM), said technical, logistical and welfare arrangements had been carefully prepared to ensure Malaysia fields a strong, disciplined and competitive team.
The government also expressed its appreciation to the experts, coaches, counsellors, training institutions and implementing agencies involved in preparing the country’s young competitors for the global competition.
According to a post on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Works Malaysia, Malaysia’s participation in WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 is focused on achieving a historic first gold medal for the country. – The Capital Post
