Cops quiz Ipoh Timur MP over controversial video

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have taken a statement from Ipoh Timur MP Howard Lee over allegations that he made his own interpretation of a Quranic verse.

Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said a statement was recorded at around 3pm at Ipoh on Tuesday (Sept 26).

“This is in connection to allegations that he insulted Islam by making an interpretation of the Surah An Nisa’ Verse 59.

“We have opened investigations under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

He said the investigation paper will be handed over to the Attorney General’s Chambers soon.

“We urge the public to be responsible social media users and not misuse the platform by raising sensitive issues or touching on 3R (race, religion and royalty) matters.

It was reported that Lee was called to give his statement over an investigation into his interpretation of a Quranic verse seen in a video which went viral.

“The police have contacted me and I will give my statement on Tuesday afternoon,” he told The Star without elaborating further on Sunday (Sept 24).

Several media outlets reported that Perak police have handed over the investigation to Federal police regarding Lee’s now-deleted video.

Perak police chief comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri on Friday (Sept 22) said Bukit Aman’s classified crimes investigation unit from the Criminal Investigation Department would conduct the investigation.
