Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said on Thursday (Oct 3) the policy would serve as a guide for the government in facing challenging security and public order issues.

“This Security and Public Order Policy covers all aspects, including the protection of the Constitution and religious institution, the strengthening of border security, the war on drugs and the protection of the country’s important assets and targets.

“With this policy, I hope the issue of overlapping policies will be re-coordinated.

The Prime Minister said the world was faced with more complex security challenges and governments of the world were having difficulties addressing them.

“It is a challenge for governments to ensure that the security of their country and their people are guaranteed.

“Trans-border crime, ideologies that go against the law and local culture, piracy, money laundering, human trafficking, as well as organised crime, threaten national security and order.

“To address these threats, a holistic policy is needed, and this includes having to form strategic partnerships at a global level, ” he said.

Dr Mahathir said although globally, Malaysia had improved its ranking in the Global Peace Index, the country should not take things for granted.

“Malaysia was placed 16th out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index 2019, which is an improvement from 25th in 2019.

“We can feel comfortable with this achievement, but there remains many aspects that needs to be improved and given focus.

“While we can be proud of it, it is more important to reduce the number of crime cases so that the rakyat can feel safe living in the country, ” said Dr Mahathir.

Also present at the launch were Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador. -The Star
