PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he will “wait and see” if opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has enough support to form a new government.

Anwar today said he had “strong, formidable and convincing” support among MPs, and TheEdge Singapore reported Dr Mahathir as saying that this was not the first time his former deputy had made such claims.

“We will have to wait to see if this is another episode of making claims that cannot be substantiated,” he told an online summit prior to Anwar’s announcement.

In 2008, Anwar claimed he had enough parliamentary support to topple the government and urged then prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to give up power peacefully.

Anwar said then that he failed after his proposal to call for a special Dewan Rakyat sitting was rejected by Abdullah.

The PKR president today said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented to grant him an audience, though this had to be postponed after the King was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN).

He said the sole discretion to dissolve Parliament was with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and that he had spoken to the King over the phone. -FMT
