KUALA LUMPUR,9 May 2026 (The Capital Post) — Proper preparation before and during pregnancy plays a crucial role in ensuring the long-term health and well-being of both mother and child, according to Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Sunway Medical Centre, Dr Sharmina Kamal Binti Shamsul Kamal.

Dr Sharmina said women are encouraged to undergo medical screenings before pregnancy to detect conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and other underlying health issues that could affect pregnancy if left untreated. She noted that with rising cases of diabetes and hypertension among young Malaysians, pre-pregnancy health checks are becoming increasingly important.

She also highlighted the importance of taking folic acid even before conception, explaining that the baby’s neural tube develops very early in pregnancy and adequate folic acid intake can help reduce the risk of serious birth defects.

According to Dr Sharmina, each stage of pregnancy carries different developmental milestones, with the first trimester being the most delicate period as the baby’s organs begin forming, while later stages focus on growth and development.

Maintaining a balanced diet throughout pregnancy is equally essential, she said, noting that iron, calcium and vitamin D deficiencies are commonly seen among expectant mothers in Malaysia. Poor nutrition may affect both maternal health and the baby’s growth and development.

Dr Sharmina added that antenatal appointments are vital for monitoring the baby’s development and detecting complications such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes early. Regular health checks also allow doctors to monitor the placenta, amniotic fluid and overall pregnancy progress.

Following childbirth, she encouraged immediate skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby to support bonding, stabilise the baby’s blood sugar levels and encourage breastfeeding. She also reminded mothers and families to pay attention to emotional well-being after delivery, as postpartum depression can occur if symptoms such as persistent sadness or withdrawal continue beyond the early weeks after birth.

Dr Sharmina stressed that strong family support, proper nutrition and informed healthcare decisions are important in helping mothers recover well and provide children with a healthy start in life.
