BERLIN 18 March 2026 (The Capital Post)- Germany plans to significantly expand its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, aiming to increase the country’s AI processing capacity by at least four times by 2030 as part of efforts to remain competitive in the global technology race.

The initiative is outlined in a government strategy paper which also proposes doubling overall data centre capacity compared with 2025 levels. Officials say the move is necessary to support the rapidly growing demand for computing power driven by AI applications, cloud services and digital transformation.

Germany’s digital minister has proposed a series of measures to accelerate the expansion, including allocating land for new data centres, speeding up regulatory approvals and encouraging stronger collaboration across companies in the AI supply chain.

The plan is also aimed at strengthening Europe’s technological sovereignty and reducing reliance on foreign computing infrastructure, as global competition in AI intensifies among major economies such as the United States and China.

Government officials say attracting investment from both domestic and international technology companies will be key to achieving the target, while local authorities may receive greater tax benefits to encourage hosting new data centre projects.

The strategy reflects Europe’s broader push to build stronger digital infrastructure and ensure the region remains competitive in developing and deploying advanced AI technologies.-The Capital Post
