KUALA LUMPUR, 7 August 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Ministry of Economy has launched the pre-launch phase of KL20 2026, marking a new stage in Malaysia’s efforts to build a more structured, results-oriented startup ecosystem and position the country as a leading innovation hub in Southeast Asia.
Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir officiated the KL20 2026 Pre-Launch Ceremony, describing the initiative as a key step towards implementing the KL20 Action Plan to accelerate the growth of local startups.
KL20 2026 aims to improve access to funding, strengthen technology development, support international market expansion and enable more Malaysian startups to scale globally.
The initiative also supports Malaysia’s ambition of becoming one of the world’s top 20 startup ecosystems by 2030.
Carrying the theme “Activating Malaysia’s Tech Arsenal: An Open Ecosystem, A Focused Mission”, KL20 2026 will focus on eight strategic sectors: green technology, agricultural technology, manufacturing and automation, Islamic finance, the creative economy, the digital economy, digital gaming and the third sector.

The ministry said the initiative aligns with the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) by promoting greater economic complexity, strengthening high-value industries and encouraging the development of more products and services that are “Made by Malaysia”.
KL20 2026 will be held across Penang, Johor and Kuala Lumpur, bringing together strategic partners to connect state-level innovation ecosystems with national economic priorities.
The Ministry of Economy said it will continue to play a leading role in developing a competitive innovation ecosystem that supports high-skilled employment opportunities and long-term economic growth.
