KOLOPIS, 30 September 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Line 1 Kolopis-Segaliud fibre optic project in Sabah has been completed and commissioned to strengthen the state’s electricity control and communications network between the east and west coasts.
The second phase of the project was commissioned at 11am on 29 September, making it the fourth project under PPKBES to be completed in 2026.
The RM47.3 million project involved the installation of approximately 510 kilometres of fibre optic cable between PMU Kolopis Beaufort and PMU Segaliud Sandakan.
The original contractor was terminated in September 2023, while a completion contractor was appointed on 16 April 2024.
The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) said the project provides redundancy for electricity supply control and communication systems along Sabah’s East-West Interconnection Link.
It is intended to improve service readiness and reduce downtime for critical teleprotection and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) communications serving the East Coast region.

The project also addresses deterioration of the existing line due to age and the previous absence of a backup fibre optic connection.
PETRA said the completed infrastructure is expected to reduce the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) by 20 per cent, while raising communications network availability to more than 99.99 per cent.
This corresponds to a targeted maximum downtime of 52.56 minutes a year and is also expected to shorten the time needed to restore electricity supply following disruptions.
