KUALA LUMPUR, 16 June 2026 (The Capital Post) – The government is stepping up efforts to address the risk of haze and prolonged dry weather through enhanced monitoring, enforcement and inter-agency coordination measures.

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Dato’ Sri Arthur Joseph Kurup chaired the first meeting of the National Haze and Dry Weather Main Committee for 2026 at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) today.

According to a Facebook post by Kementerian Sumber Asli dan Kelestarian Alam (NRES), the meeting reviewed the latest weather conditions, the outlook for the Southwest Monsoon season and the current air quality situation, while serving as a platform to formulate strategies to prevent open burning and haze incidents that could affect economic activities, air quality and public health.

Presentations by NRES, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia), the Department of Environment (JAS), the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia and the National Disaster Management Agency focused on preparedness measures and coordinated actions needed to address hot and dry weather conditions, including the potential occurrence of a strong El Niño phenomenon.

The ministry said close cooperation among ministries, departments, agencies and state governments remains essential to ensuring effective implementation of mitigation and response measures.
