NRES Steps Up Fight Against Illegal E-Waste

PORT KLANG, 2 July 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) has intensified efforts to combat the illegal importation of electronic waste (e-waste) as part of its commitment to protecting public health and safeguarding the environment.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, conducted a working visit to the Department of Environment (DOE) Port Klang Branch to assess enforcement readiness and the handling of e-waste issues at one of the country’s main entry points.

The visit also provided an opportunity to review operational challenges on the ground and strengthen enforcement measures aimed at preventing the illegal entry and improper management of electronic waste in Malaysia.

Syed Ibrahim said effective e-waste management is essential not only to prevent pollution caused by hazardous materials but also to protect public health, conserve natural resources and support the nation’s transition towards a circular economy.

According to a post on the official Facebook page of Kementerian Sumber Asli dan Kelestarian Alam (NRES), the ministry remains committed to ensuring that e-waste is managed effectively through stronger enforcement and compliance with national environmental laws, while preventing Malaysia from becoming an illegal dumping ground for electronic waste. – The Capital Post.
