KUALA LUMPUR 10 March 2026 (The Capital Post)- Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is now capable of identifying potential signs of heart disease during routine breast cancer screenings, offering an additional layer of health assessment for patients undergoing mammograms.
Researchers have found that AI-powered tools can analyse mammogram images to detect calcium deposits in breast arteries, a condition known as breast arterial calcification. These deposits can be an indicator of underlying cardiovascular disease, which remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide.
Traditionally, mammograms are primarily used to detect early signs of breast cancer. However, with the integration of AI algorithms, the same imaging data can be used to identify cardiovascular risk factors without requiring additional tests or procedures.
Medical experts say the technology could help doctors flag patients who may benefit from further heart health evaluation, potentially enabling earlier intervention and preventive treatment.
The use of AI in this context may also improve the efficiency of screening programmes, as the analysis can be carried out automatically alongside routine mammogram assessments.
Researchers believe that integrating AI into existing screening systems could play a key role in improving both cancer detection and cardiovascular risk assessment, providing broader health insights from a single medical test.-The Capital Post
