KUALA LUMPUR: Anwar Ibrahim said there was no need for him to undergo a polygraph test as part of the ongoing police investigation into a sexual complaint filed against him by a former research assistant.
“There is no basis. There must be evidence and a need for it,” he told reporters after addressing an international conference here.
On Dec 17, police summoned Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, who accused Anwar of sexually assaulting him in October 2018, to undergo a polygraph test at Bukit Aman.
Police, who have yet to release results of the test, have since referred the matter to Attorney-General Tommy Thomas.
Yusoff’s police report against Anwar in early December resulted in a probe by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit (D5) under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which deals with using criminal force to outrage a person’s modesty.
Anwar said a polygraph test is useless in the absence of witness statements as well as details such as the time and place of an incident.
“If I accuse you of robbing, and ask you to undergo a polygraph test, that doesn’t make sense.
“So there must be a basis in doing it,” he added.
He said police have also not made any request on him to undergo the test.
“Why create an issue? You also understand the principles of law and justice. Any allegation, if there is no basis, you cannot get the person to be on the defensive,” Anwar said.
Anwar said he knew the people behind the allegations against him.
“I know the game. I know some of the players using these people. Let the police deal with it.
“Unlike many other cases, I have volunteered (to the police) to do it fast, and invited them to the house, and I went to see them at the police headquarters.” -FMT
