Kuala Lumpur 4 May 2026 (The Capital Post) – Any decision on the timing of elections or the dissolution of legislative assemblies must strictly adhere to the Federal Constitution and legal procedures, rather than speculation, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
He made the remarks in response to suggestions that early elections could be called later this year, stressing that such decisions cannot be based on political assumptions or public conjecture.
Dr Wee emphasised that the authority to dissolve assemblies lies within the framework of the law, and any move must comply with constitutional principles. He added that elections should only be held when the appropriate legal processes are followed, not in reaction to political narratives or timing speculation.
He also pointed out that election timing in Malaysia is inherently flexible, noting that polls can be called at any time within the constitutional limits, whether at the federal or state level.
Addressing claims that certain political developments could trigger early elections, Dr Wee dismissed such views, stating that governance decisions should not be influenced by assumptions about political advantage or pressure from external commentary.

He further explained that under Malaysia’s democratic system, only those in power have the authority to request a dissolution, in line with established constitutional practices.
Dr Wee added that political parties must remain prepared for elections at any time, as the timing ultimately depends on constitutional provisions and decisions made by the governing authorities.
The statement comes amid heightened political discussions surrounding potential election timelines, with leaders urging adherence to legal frameworks to ensure stability and proper governance.-The Capital Post
