PUTRAJAYA 3 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has expressed support for a proposal to establish special courts specifically to hear cases involving serious road accidents, saying such a move could streamline legal proceedings and improve justice outcomes for victims.
JPJ Director‑General Mohd Amir Najib said on Friday that the department agrees with calls from road safety advocates for a specialised judicial process to address cases involving fatalities or severe injuries. He added that dedicated courts may help ensure more efficient handling of complex technical evidence, such as accident reconstruction and forensic reports.
According to Mohd Amir, current court backlogs and lengthy trial processes can delay justice for families affected by fatal collisions, with many cases lingering for years before conclusion. A special court, he said, would allow legal officers and judges to develop expertise in traffic‑related matters and expedite verdicts.
JPJ also highlighted that such a judicial structure could enhance public confidence in the legal system, particularly in instances where accident victims or their next of kin await compensation and court decisions. Officials noted that quicker resolutions could serve as a stronger deterrent against reckless behaviour on the roads.

The proposal for special road accident courts has been gaining traction among lawmakers and safety groups, with proponents arguing that targeted legal forums will better address the unique challenges posed by severe traffic incidents. JPJ affirmed its willingness to work with ministries and legal authorities to explore implementation.
Mohd Amir further emphasised that educational campaigns on road safety and enforcement efforts will continue alongside any judicial reforms, all aimed at reducing the high number of serious crashes on Malaysian roads.-The Capital Post
