KUALA LUMPUR, June 4, 2026 (The Capital Post) – According to information shared on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysia continues to strengthen its position as a regional leader in advanced materials technology through the launch of the “From Methane to Graphene: Revolutionising Industry with Graphene” programme at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

The event was officiated by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Chang Lih Kang, who highlighted Malaysia’s unique position as the only ASEAN country with a national-level graphene programme.

In his speech, Chang described graphene as a global “super material” with vast industrial potential, noting that Malaysia has successfully developed a local ecosystem that enables graphene-based technologies to move beyond research laboratories and into commercial applications.

Through NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB), the government has implemented strategic initiatives that have enabled graphene technologies to be adopted across sectors including energy, manufacturing, agriculture and construction by local startups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

MOSTI also reaffirmed its commitment to building a high-value, inclusive and sustainable innovation-driven economy that enables Malaysian industries to move up the global value chain and enhance international competitiveness.

The ministry is supporting circular economy initiatives through its Strategic Research Fund, which focuses on converting palm oil-based biogas (biomethane) into hydrogen and graphene through hydrogen pyrolysis processes. The initiative not only transforms bio-based waste into high-value materials but also contributes to carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) efforts that support Malaysia’s clean energy agenda.

The event also witnessed the launch of a strategic collaboration between Gas Malaysia Berhad and United Kingdom-based company Levidian through the installation of the first ‘LOOP’ technology system in the Asia-Pacific region.

The new technology is expected to complement existing facilities, increase national graphene production capacity and create opportunities for knowledge-sharing and expertise development within Malaysia’s advanced materials ecosystem. – The Capital Post
