Malaysia Moves to Establish National Data Commission

PUTRAJAYA, 5 July 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Ministry of Digital has taken a significant step towards strengthening Malaysia’s data governance framework through the proposed establishment of the Malaysia Data Commission, following a stakeholder engagement session held in Putrajaya today.

The session, titled the Consultation on the Study for the Establishment of the Malaysia Data Commission, was officiated by Deputy Secretary-General (Digital Development) Encik Ma. Sivanesan a/l Marimuthu@Muthiah. It brought together key ministries, government departments and central agencies involved in the national data ecosystem to discuss challenges, policy direction and strategic considerations for future data governance.

Participating agencies included Bank Negara Malaysia, the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the Government Chief Security Officer (CGSO), the National Registration Department (JPN) and the Ministry of Economy, among others.

The proposed commission is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Malaysia’s data governance framework, improving digital trust and enabling a more secure and reliable data-sharing ecosystem to support data-driven economic growth.

The initiative is also aligned with efforts to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, drive digital innovation and enhance Malaysia’s global competitiveness under the Malaysia Digital Action Plan 2030 (MD2030), which aims to position the country as a leading AI nation by 2030.

Officials said the establishment of a dedicated data governance body would provide a more structured approach to managing data assets across sectors while ensuring security, interoperability and responsible usage in line with national digital aspirations. – The Capital Post.
