KUALA LUMPUR: Three pupils from SJK(T) Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur, bagged yet another international award by clinching gold and winning the Young Scientist Award 2020 at the International Invention and Trade Expo (ITE), London.

The young inventors are Yuvika Mahaganapathy, 10, Kailesh Saravana, 11, and Kavisha Nagarajan, 11.
They won gold for their invention called “My Soil My Plant”, which is a soil conductivity electrical tester that determines which type of soil is suitable for cultivation of different breeds of plants.
Due to Covid-19, the International Invention and Trade Expo, London (ITE) was held virtually where contestants submitted their application and innovation online. Selected innovators had to present their invention to a panel of three judges via Zoom call. Their invention beat 400 other contestants from 27 countries.
This award is an addition to the many awards that this group of bright inventors have received recently.
Just last month, their invention won them gold at the International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN) 2020 and silver at the International Festival of Engineering Science and Technology in Tunisia. They have also won a local award this year by getting first place at the Malaysia Young Scientist Conference & Exhibition last month.
Dr Mahaaganapathy Dass, Yuvika’s father, could not contain his happiness over the latest victory of his daughter and her teammates.

“As a father, I am very proud of their achievement. They have worked very hard as a team during the movement control order (MCO), meeting every day using Zoom. They deserve all the recognition and accolades they get, ” he added, saying that the children spent five months to come up with their innovation of a soil testing tool.
Saravanan and Nagarajan, father to Kailesh and Kavisha, respectively, also expressed their joy.
“We, as parents, are proud of their achievements and success, ” said Saravanan.
“Even though there were a few challenges and obstacles, we were willing to do everything necessary to ensure our children succeed in their project, ” Nagarajan said.
Dr Mahaaganapathy said their children’s innovation has been registered with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia and they are currently in deep discussion with two organisations to commercialise this invention.
The team will next participate in the 31st International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition, Malaysia (ITEX) happening on Nov 21 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. -The Star
