KUALA LUMPUR: A group of student protesters has urged the government to abolish the Universities and University Colleges Act (Auku) 1971.
The demonstrators, representing various student organizations under the Abolishment of Auku Secretariat, marched to the Parliament building on Monday (Feb 9) morning to submit a memorandum outlining their demands.
They argued that the Act should be replaced with more inclusive legislation.
“This memorandum urges the government to fully repeal the Act and introduce a more progressive, inclusive, and democratic legal framework.
“Even with multiple amendments, the Act still maintains a centralised power structure, allowing political interference, administrative abuse, and restrictions on freedom of expression and association.

“This contradicts the principles of constitutional democracy and undermines the role of universities as independent and critical institutions of knowledge,” the group stated in the memorandum.
The protesters also warned that if the government does not repeal the Act, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir should resign.
