Anwar, Putin Discuss Energy, Trade and Strategic Cooperation

MOSCOW, 18 June 2026 (The Capital Post) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on a wide range of bilateral cooperation, with a particular focus on strengthening ties in the energy sector.

According to a Facebook post by Anwar Ibrahim, the meeting explored strategic collaboration areas of mutual interest between Malaysia and the Russian Federation, including long-term cooperation in energy and oil supply.

Anwar also expressed appreciation for Russia’s continued commitment to supporting energy cooperation and highlighted Malaysia’s efforts to enhance economic ties with Moscow.

Both leaders exchanged views on expanding cooperation in emerging sectors such as new technologies, cybersecurity, digital development, artificial intelligence (AI), modern agriculture and pharmaceuticals.

The discussions further included proposals to facilitate people-to-people mobility through visa exemptions, as well as exploring mechanisms to strengthen trade and investment flows using local currencies, namely the Malaysian Ringgit and Russian Ruble.

Anwar also welcomed President Putin’s consistent stance on international issues, including Gaza and Iran.

He reaffirmed that the MADANI Government remains committed to strengthening Malaysia’s energy security through strategic international partnerships aimed at ensuring stable, continuous and sustainable energy supply for the benefit of the people. – The Capital Post
