ATHENS 8 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – Greece has announced plans to prohibit children under the age of 15 from accessing social media platforms, with the proposed law expected to take effect from January 1, 2027.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the measure is aimed at protecting young users from the negative psychological effects associated with prolonged social media use, including anxiety, sleep disruption and addictive behaviour patterns. The government described the move as a necessary step to safeguard the well-being of minors in an increasingly digital environment.
The proposed legislation is anticipated to pass smoothly through parliament, given the government’s strong majority. Authorities have indicated that the policy was developed following consultations with parents and reflects growing public concern over children’s exposure to online platforms.

Officials also highlighted that Greece has already introduced related measures, such as banning mobile phone use in schools and implementing parental control tools to manage screen time among teenagers. The new restriction would further strengthen these efforts by directly limiting access to major social media networks.
The initiative places Greece among a growing number of countries taking stricter action on youth access to digital platforms. The government has also called on the European Union to consider adopting similar rules across member states, emphasising the need for coordinated action at a regional level.-The Capital Post
