KUALA LUMPUR 9 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – A coalition of non-governmental organisations has voiced strong support for the proposed implementation of a 30km/h speed limit in school zones, urging authorities to ensure strict and effective enforcement once the measure is formalised.
The group, comprising various road safety and advocacy organisations, endorsed ongoing efforts to amend the Road Transport Act 1987 to legally enforce the reduced speed limit. They emphasised that the initiative is a critical step in improving road safety, particularly for children travelling to and from school.
Advocates stressed the need for clear enforcement mechanisms, noting that legal provisions must be accompanied by consistent monitoring and penalties to deter violations. They highlighted that once the limit is officially gazetted, authorities will have the power to take action against offenders under existing laws.
The coalition also called for urgent implementation of the measure, warning that delays could put young lives at continued risk. They proposed a fixed fine for motorists who exceed the limit and recommended defining school zones within a specific radius of school entrances to ensure clarity in enforcement.

In addition to legal measures, the groups advocated for improved road design features such as raised pedestrian crossings and traffic-calming infrastructure to naturally reduce vehicle speeds. They noted that safer school environments can be achieved through a combination of enforcement and practical urban planning solutions.
Authorities have previously indicated that enforcement could include the use of automated cameras and targeted monitoring during peak school hours, as part of broader efforts to enhance road safety nationwide.-The Capital Post
