Khaled Inspects Defence Readiness at Layang-Layang Island

SABAH, 17 June 2026 (The Capital Post) – Defence Minister Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin conducted a working visit to Pulau Layang-Layang to assess operational readiness and the welfare of personnel stationed at the Royal Malaysian Navy’s (TLDM) Station LIMA, which plays a key role in safeguarding Malaysia’s sovereignty in the South China Sea.

According to a Facebook post by Kementerian Pertahanan Malaysia, Khaled was briefed on the station’s operations and support facilities that enable personnel to carry out their duties while ensuring the country’s defence preparedness remains at an optimal level.

During the visit, the minister also participated in a coral restoration programme involving the National Security Council (MKN), the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, TLDM, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The ministry said the initiative reflects the government’s continued commitment to preserving marine ecosystems and ensuring the sustainability of coral reefs in Malaysia’s strategic waters.

Khaled said Pulau Layang-Layang would continue to be strengthened as the nation’s frontline defence outpost in the South China Sea through improvements in strategic infrastructure, operational facilities, logistics, communications and the adoption of new technologies, including unmanned systems, to enhance maritime domain awareness.

Also present were Defence Ministry secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali, Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Dr. Zulhelmy Ithnain, Royal Malaysian Air Force chief General Tan Sri Muhamad Norazlan Aris and Joint Forces commander Lieutenant General Datuk Tengku Muhammad Fauzi Tengku Ibrahim. – The Capital Post
