KOTA KINABALU: The expansion of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) is set to start in the third quarter of this year, said Malaysia Airports managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani.
He said the cabinet had approved the RM442.3 million expansion project in November.
It will increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity from nine million to 12 million.
The upgrades include expansion of the main terminal, a new multi-storey car park, seven aircraft parking bays and road improvements around the airport.
The project is privately financed by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd without any government guarantees.
“This upgrade will provide greater comfort for airport users. It will take about three years to complete, and we are committed to ensuring that it is finished within the targeted timeline.
“Hopefully, as I mentioned earlier, the project will start in the third quarter of this year,” he told reporters after the MyAirportCARES Ceria Kembali ke Sekolah programme at a mall here.
Izani said an additional 21 multi-cubicle restrooms would be constructed.
Commenting on the quick response (QR) code Immigration clearance system at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), he said the system has been effective and well-received by travellers.
“Travellers are very happy with the new development, which has significantly improved their comfort.
“We plan to introduce similar technology in Sabah. Our goal is to eventually implement this technology across all airports under Malaysia Airports, including those in Sabah,” he added.
