KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded a director-general and a director of a government agency on suspicion of conspiring to misappropriate funds totaling around RM900,000.

A five-day remand until Feb 16 was granted by Magistrate Ezrene Zakariah at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (Feb 12), following an application by MACC.

Sources said both male suspects, in their 50s, were arrested at approximately 1pm on Wednesday (Feb 11) when they arrived at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to give statements.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly abused their positions and authority by diverting financial allocations amounting to about RM900,000 for personal gain,” a source said.

They are also believed to have submitted false claims and documents totaling around RM60,000 to perform the Umrah while attending official duties in Jeddah from Jan 29 to Feb 4 last year.
