LANGKAWI, 2 July 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Ministry of Transport Malaysia (MOT), through its Maritime Division, has reinforced efforts to enhance the country’s ferry safety standards by co-organising the IMO SCOPE Project: National Roundtable on Ferry Safety 2026 with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Held in Langkawi from 29 to 30 June, the programme brought together representatives from government ministries, agencies, ferry operators, maritime industry players and other key stakeholders to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening ferry safety in Malaysia.
Discussions focused on developing a more comprehensive and sustainable approach to ferry safety while aligning Malaysia’s regulatory framework and operational practices with international standards and best practices.
The programme was attended by IMO SCOPE Project Lead Monica Paz and a team of IMO-appointed consultants, who shared global expertise, practical experiences and best practices in implementing ferry safety initiatives. They also highlighted the importance of international cooperation and multi-stakeholder collaboration in improving maritime transport safety.

Throughout the two-day event, delegates reviewed ferry safety assessment findings, exchanged views on current challenges and explored recommendations to strengthen governance and operational safety within Malaysia’s ferry sector. The outcomes are expected to support future policy development, regulatory improvements and strategic initiatives aimed at creating a safer, more efficient and resilient national ferry transport system.
