GEORGE TOWN, Feb 10 — Road closures for the Mutiara Line LRT construction project in Penang will be kept to a minimum during festive periods such as the upcoming Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and transport, Zairil Khir Johari, said the project owner, MRT Corp, and the contractor, SRS Consortium, have assured that major road closures will be avoided during these peak periods.

“If any work is necessary, it will be carried out at night, not during peak hours,” he told reporters after attending the PNBCAP Awards ceremony and an MOU signing between Think City and Penang Green Council today.

Zairil explained that MRT Corp submits a monthly traffic management plan (TMP), which is reviewed by relevant agencies, including local authorities and the Public Works Department.

“The TMP is dynamic, as it changes depending on the location and scope of the ongoing works,” he said.

Updates to the TMP will be made available to the public through various channels, including social media platforms such as Facebook.

“These are not last-minute plans, but due to the nature of the project, adjustments are made as the construction progresses. Any changes in bus routes will also be announced by Rapid Penang,” he added.

Construction of the Mutiara Line LRT began earlier this year. The 29.5-kilometre line will feature 21 stations across the island, supported by park-and-ride facilities, feeder bus services, and two main depots.

Once completed, the line will serve key areas including Penang International Airport, the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, George Town city centre, Penang Sentral, and several police stations such as Jalan Tengah, Bayan Baru, Sungai Nibong, and Jelutong.
