KUALA LUMPUR 17 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Bhd (MMHE) is exploring a strategic partnership with South Korea’s Hanwha Power Systems for potential cooperation in newbuilding, conversion and retrofit ship projects.

The company said it is considering a role as Hanwha Power Systems’ regional shipyard partner, where MMHE would contribute its engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) capabilities for selected maritime projects.

Under the proposed collaboration, Hanwha Power Systems is expected to provide engineering and procurement expertise, while both parties explore opportunities in developing more efficient and sustainable shipbuilding solutions.

The initiative forms part of MMHE’s broader strategy to diversify its portfolio beyond traditional offshore oil and gas activities, while expanding into higher-value shipbuilding and energy-transition-related marine projects. Industry observers say the move reflects growing demand for greener maritime technologies and vessel upgrades.

MMHE said the partnership would also support efforts to improve decarbonisation in the maritime sector, in line with global shipping industry targets to reduce emissions and modernise fleets.

Analysts noted that such collaborations between regional shipyards and global engineering firms are becoming more common as the industry shifts towards cleaner fuels, retrofitting older vessels, and developing next-generation ship designs.

The discussions are still at an exploratory stage, with no final agreement announced yet, but both sides are expected to continue evaluating potential project pipelines and technical cooperation frameworks.

The move further positions MMHE to benefit from long-term offshore energy transition trends while strengthening its role in the regional marine engineering sector. -The Capital Post
