PETALING JAYA 1 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – Malaysia’s hopes of integrating veteran men’s singles badminton star Lee Zii Jia into the national squad’s training programme suffered a setback on Wednesday after the player was absent from sessions at the Academy Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara due to a slight injury.

The Olympic bronze medallist had been scheduled to begin practice with the national team as part of its build‑up to the Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark, later this month. However, the 28‑year‑old pulled out of the first day of drills, prompting coaching staff and officials to reassess his availability.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz confirmed that Zii Jia’s participation will be postponed as he continues his recovery. He explained that the player’s return will depend on how quickly the injury heals and when the medical team clears him to resume full training.

Despite the delay in linking up with his national teammates, Zii Jia remains committed to joining the squad ahead of the prestigious men’s team tournament, according to BAM. Officials indicated that both parties are monitoring his condition closely to determine the appropriate time for him to resume integrated competitive work.

His training setback comes after a period of mixed results on tour as he has been working through injury challenges, with recent competitions highlighting the importance of full fitness and confidence heading into team events.-The Capital Post
