KUALA LUMPUR 15 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – Malaysia’s top men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia believes the national team can emerge as a surprise contender in the upcoming Thomas Cup, describing the squad as a “dark horse” capable of upsetting stronger opponents.
Zii Jia said the team’s preparation has improved steadily ahead of the prestigious badminton tournament, with players showing better understanding and cohesion during training sessions. He added that while Malaysia may not be the outright favourite, the squad has the potential to challenge traditional powerhouses if they perform at their best.
The Thomas Cup, which will take place in Horsens, Denmark from April 24 to May 3, will see Malaysia competing against top badminton nations including China, Indonesia and Japan. The national team is aiming to end a long 34-year title drought.
Zii Jia is expected to play a key role in the singles lineup, with coaches viewing him as an important point contributor, especially in crucial ties. His recent return to full training after recovering from injury has further strengthened Malaysia’s hopes.

Team officials have also expressed confidence that a lighter group-stage schedule could help players build rhythm and confidence before facing tougher opponents in the knockout stages.
Despite the strong competition, Zii Jia remains optimistic that Malaysia can exceed expectations if the team maintains focus and delivers consistent performances throughout the tournament.
The national squad continues its final phase of preparations ahead of departure, with emphasis placed on strategy, fitness and mental readiness. -The Capital Post
