Kuala Lumpur 6 May 2026 (The Capital Post) – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified more than 600 fake social media posts related to the global energy crisis since the end of March, raising concerns over coordinated misinformation campaigns.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the posts largely focused on sensitive economic issues, including fuel prices, the Strait of Hormuz, and global supply disruptions.
He noted that authorities cannot rule out the possibility of coordinated inauthentic behaviour (CIB), as many of the posts shared identical visuals, were published simultaneously, and appeared designed to reach wide audiences.
Fahmi stressed that strict action is being taken against those responsible for spreading false information. So far, five cases have been brought to court, while eight individuals have been issued compounds totalling RM200,000.

He added that several other cases remain under investigation or have been referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers for further action.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and verify information before sharing, especially on sensitive topics that could affect public perception and economic stability.
The rise in misinformation highlights ongoing challenges in managing digital content, particularly during periods of global uncertainty, where false narratives can spread rapidly across online platforms.-The Capital Post
