Anwar Meets Sasakawa in Japan, Discusses Regional and Global Peace Efforts

TOKYO, June 9, 2026 (The Capital Post) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim began the first day of his official visit to Japan with a meeting with long-time associate Tan Sri Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, where both leaders reflected on decades of cooperation and exchanged views on pressing international issues.

During the meeting, Anwar and Sasakawa revisited their longstanding collaboration, including their involvement in Forum 2000, a global platform founded by former Czech President Václav Havel that brings together world leaders, intellectuals and policymakers to discuss democracy, human rights, peace and the future of global civilisation.

The Prime Minister said the discussion also touched on efforts to empower young leaders across Southeast Asia through various leadership development programmes inspired by the ideals of the Asian Renaissance, which emphasise values-based leadership, cultural understanding and humanity.

Anwar expressed appreciation for Sasakawa’s longstanding humanitarian contributions around the world and acknowledged his role in advancing peace-building initiatives and social development efforts across various regions.

The two also exchanged views on several escalating international crises, including the situation in Myanmar, the Israel-Iran conflict and the continuing humanitarian tragedy in Palestine.

Anwar stressed that global peace efforts must continue to receive strong support from world leaders and the international community, noting that lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue, mutual understanding and a shared commitment to justice.
