PETALING JAYA: Japan’s resilience in facing disasters is something that Malaysia can emulate to increase preparedness and ease recovery when affected, says MCA president Datuk Dr Seri Wee Ka Siong.

Dr Wee, who was part of the delegation to visit Japan’s House of Representatives Special Committee on Disasters chairman His Excellency Etoh Taku described it as an eye-opening experience.
“Today, the Dewan Rakyat Infrastructure, Transport and Communication Select Committee paid a courtesy call on Etoh and it was an eye-opening experience as we got to study the best practices by Japan in rebuilding infrastructure after a disaster.
“We learned about how Japan enhances its resilience to face future events and restore essential infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and utilities, which is paramount for the safety and well-being of the affected population.

“There are measures and practices we can apply in our own country to improve our preparedness for any untoward incidents in the future and to reduce the impacts on those who are affected,” he said in a Facebook post.
Dr Wee said Japan’s House of Representatives had allocated USD100bil to prepare for and mitigate damage from natural disasters for a five years period.
The delegation was led by the Selection Committee chairman Yusuf Abd Wahab and among those who participated were Klang MP V. Ganabatirau Wangsa Maju Zahir Hassan, Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, Sipitang MP Datuk Matbali Musah and Jerantut MP Khairil Nizam Khirudin.
