KUALA LUMPUR, 2 July 2026 (The Capital Post) – Malaysia has taken a significant step towards a cleaner energy future with the launch of a strategic roadmap aimed at phasing out coal-fired electricity generation by 2044.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof, officiated the closing ceremony of the “Malaysia’s Energy Future: Power Sector Decarbonization Deep Dive” dialogue series, where he also launched the insight report titled “Beyond Coal: Building a Flexible, Resilient and Clean Power System for Malaysia.”
The report is the result of a strategic collaboration between PETRA and the World Economic Forum (WEF), with support from KPMG, and outlines Malaysia’s long-term strategy to transition towards a low-carbon electricity sector.
Among its key recommendations is the gradual retirement of coal-fired power generation by 2044 through innovative initiatives, including repurposing existing coal plant sites into clean energy hubs. The strategy is expected to generate new economic opportunities, create future-ready jobs and ensure a reliable and affordable energy supply for the nation.
