SANDAKAN 20 April 2026 (The Capital Post) – Mental health and psychosocial support services are being provided to victims of the devastating fire in Sandakan, as authorities move to address the emotional and psychological impact of the disaster.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said specialised teams have been deployed to evacuation centres to offer counselling and emotional assistance to those affected by the blaze, which displaced thousands of residents.
The initiative forms part of Malaysia’s disaster response framework, where mental health and psychosocial support services are integrated alongside emergency aid to help victims cope with trauma and stress following major incidents.
Dzulkefly noted that such support is crucial, as individuals affected by disasters often experience anxiety, depression and emotional distress in the aftermath of sudden loss and displacement.
The fire in Kampung Bahagia destroyed hundreds of homes and forced large numbers of residents into temporary shelters, with relief centres activated to house affected families while assistance efforts continue.

Authorities said counselling services are being provided on-site, with trained personnel offering psychological first aid, stress management guidance and referrals for further treatment where necessary.
The Health Ministry emphasised that mental health care is a key component of recovery, particularly in large-scale disasters where victims may face prolonged hardship and uncertainty.
Officials added that ongoing monitoring and support will continue as part of broader relief operations, ensuring that both the physical and emotional needs of victims are addressed during the recovery phase.-The Capital Post
