KUALA LUMPUR, 19 May 2026 (The Capital Post) — Malaysia’s Economic Minister, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the government remains committed to strengthening the country’s economic restructuring efforts through fiscal reforms and the implementation of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13).

Speaking during a special interview with Sinar Harian on 12 May, the minister discussed the nation’s economic restructuring agenda in addressing global challenges through a more practical and implementation-oriented approach.

According to him, the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which has been incorporated into RMK13, will continue to be strengthened as part of the government’s preparedness in facing increasingly challenging global economic conditions.

He said the government is also committed to reducing the country’s dependency on foreign workers from 15 per cent to 10 per cent by 2030.

In addition, the government aims to strengthen the rakyat’s economic foundation by focusing not only on cost-of-living concerns but also on increasing income levels and economic capability.

Akmal Nasrullah also highlighted the government’s target of achieving readiness for B30 biodiesel implementation by 2030 as part of Malaysia’s broader sustainability and energy transition agenda.

He added that no new coal-fired power plants would be approved moving forward, while the country’s final coal power plant is expected to cease operations by 2044 in efforts to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

The minister said the reforms reflect the government’s aspiration to strengthen market competitiveness and expand structural economic reforms, including raising minimum wages, reducing reliance on low-cost foreign labour and narrowing income inequality gaps.
