DUNGUN, 18 May 2026 (The Capital Post) — The implementation of the Santong Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project developed by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) in Dungun, Terengganu reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the resilience of Malaysia’s national energy system while ensuring stable domestic electricity supply.
According to the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), the project was introduced as part of efforts to address global energy supply challenges, including supply chain uncertainties and fluctuations in international energy markets.
Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Fadillah Yusof, officiated the Santong Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, which reflects the government’s commitment to implementing the national energy transition agenda in a progressive and balanced manner.
The Santong BESS project, with a capacity of 100MW/400MWh, is among Malaysia’s earliest large-scale utility battery energy storage projects and is expected to play an important role in strengthening grid stability while supporting the integration of renewable energy into the national power supply system.
PETRA stated that the development of energy storage technologies such as BESS is crucial in addressing intermittency challenges associated with renewable energy sources, particularly solar energy, while also improving the flexibility and resilience of the national grid system.
The BESS system functions as a large-scale “power bank” capable of storing excess electricity and releasing it when needed to stabilise grid frequency and reduce the risk of electricity supply disruptions.

According to the ministry, the Santong project also serves as Malaysia’s first “smart energy bank” connected to the grid using grid-forming technology, making it an important learning platform for the national energy industry in the development and integration of utility-scale energy storage technology.
In addition to supporting the country’s green energy agenda, the project is expected to create opportunities for the development of a new industrial ecosystem involving battery technology, energy management systems, smart grid engineering and local talent development in green energy technology.
PETRA said the government will continue working closely with industry players to ensure that new energy technologies such as BESS can be developed sustainably, safely and for the long-term benefit of the country and its people.
